Roe's Prevail in Hard-Fought Tournament
Cadiz, KY, July 9, 2023 - Under ideal weather conditions—overcast with a slight breeze—bass anglers gathered for a highly competitive tournament on Kentucky Lake. In line with conservation efforts, the tournament organizers maintained a three fish limit for this midsummer event. Despite the vacation season drawing some contenders away, eight teams showcased their angling skills, resulting in a total catch of 20 fish weighing 53.07 pounds. The tournament boasted a generous prize pool of $600, with additional rewards of $40 each for the Men's and Ladies' Big Bass categories. All fish were successfully released back into the water, ensuring their continued survival and the sustainability of the fishery.
Mike and Donna Roe emerged as the victorious duo, exhibiting exceptional angling prowess with a three fish limit weighing 10.63 pounds. Throughout the day, the Roes remained in shallow waters, targeting the back of Jonathan Creek, where depths did not exceed 4 feet. Employing Carolina rigged brown pumpkin Bizzbait Cutter Craws, they skillfully enticed the bass to strike. The Roes culled several times, catching approximately 20 fish. Their last cull, with only 30 minutes remaining, yielded a significant 4.20-pound bass, propelling them to victory and earning Mike the Men's Big Bass title. The Roes claimed a well-deserved cash prize of $400, with $360 awarded for their first-place finish and an additional $40 for Mike's noteworthy catch.
Securing the second-place position were Larry Bailey and Tammy Hoffner, whose three fish limit weighed 10.36 pounds, anchored by Tammy's impressive 4.36-pound largemouth bass. Bailey and Hoffner employed a different strategy, venturing farther south on the lake to explore points and docks. Their arsenal included crankbaits and jigs, which proved effective in enticing the bass to bite. The team earned a total prize of $280, with $240 awarded for their second-place finish and an additional $40 for Tammy's achievement as the Ladies' Big Bass winner.
Wes Dunn and Sydnie Swinford claimed the third-place spot with their strategic choice of fishing locations. Opting for the northern part of the lake, they focused on ledges, employing jigs and soft plastics to tempt the bass. Their three fish limit weighed an impressive 9.55 pounds.
Jerrod and Tammy Easley secured the fourth position with a three fish limit weighing 7.53 pounds, while Troy and Tammy Courtney claimed fifth place with three fish totaling 6.35 pounds.
