Cruvellier Wins $5000 in Alabama South Season Opener on Lake Eufaula

ATHENS, Al. –Robert Cruvellier won the 2021 Bass Pro Shops Open Series Alabama South Division tournament, held February 13th on Lake Eufaula.  Running out of Lakepoint Resort State Park in Eufaula, AL the Auburn University angler from Alburg, VT caught five bass weighing 23.71 pounds. For the Boater Division victory, Cruvellier took home a check for $5000 for his win.

“I caught my fish mainly in Cowikee Creek area of the lake. I was swimming a jig, punching, flipping, and throwing a chatter-bait in a particular area of the creek. I was targeting a certain area that has a few different types of grass and it seemed to hold the bigger fish.” Cruvellier said.  

In second for the boaters, Jonathan “Jon” Adams of Phenix City, AL landed a five-bass tournament limit going 19.10 pounds that included the big bass for the boaters that weighed 7.00 pounds.

“I caught my fish all over the lake today. I caught some fish on a chatter-bait, a crankbait, and a few on a jig. I lost two fish about 4 pounds each that would have helped me for sure. I caught that big bass on a chatter-bait around 7:00AM this morning.” Adams said. 

Adam Byrd of Smiths, AL took third for the boaters with five bass going 18.20 pounds. 

“I caught my fish today swimming a jig about 45 minutes up-river.” Byrd said.

Finishing fourth, Ryan Ingram of Phenix City, AL landed a five-bass limit for 17.08 pounds. Michael Smith of Andalusia, AL rounded out the top five boaters with five bass at 16.19 pounds.

In the Co-Angler Division, Greg Ford of Phenix City, AL won with three bass going 10.53 pounds. He pocketed a check for $950 for his win.

“We were fishing South today and I caught my fish on a shakey-head.” Ford said. 

Taking second for the co-anglers, Dalton “Chase” Osborne of Phenix City, AL brought in a three bass weighing 7.60 pounds. 

“I caught two of my fish South on a Rat-L-Trap and we ran back up the river and I caught one on a shakey-head.” Osborne said.  

Barry Jones of Verbena, AL placed third among the co-anglers with three bass going 7.32 pounds. 

“I caught my fish South also on a Carolina-rig and a shakey-head. I caught fifteen fish today. I had a great boater today, he put us on some fish. “  Jones said. 

In fourth place among the co-anglers, Joe Chilcott of Crestview, FL brought in three bass for 7.25 pounds. David Copeland of Andalusia, AL finished in fifth place with two bass for 7.00 pounds that also included a 4.95-pound big bass for the co-anglers.

“I caught that big bass on a spinnerbait just after my boater caught that 7 pounder. He was throwing a chatter-bait and I was throwing a spinnerbait.” Copeland said.

Slated for March 20th, 2021 the next tournament will be held on Lake Mitchell out of Higgins Ferry Landing in Clanton, AL. At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance the 2022 Ray Scott Championship to be held at Lake Eufaula in April, 2022.

Out of an overabundance of caution The Team Tour Championship that was scheduled for 10/10-11/2020 on Wheeler Lake has be postponed.  The National Weather Service is forecasting winds of 10-20 mph with gust up to 35mph for Saturday, and winds of 10-15 mph with gust up to 20 mph Sunday.  The safety of our anglers is the number on concern and factor when making the tough decisions on postponing a tournament.  The new dates for the Team Tour Championship will be November 21-22 on Wheeler Lak
