Bass Pro Shops Open Series Coming To Lake Okeechobee

Athens, AL - The south Florida division of the Bass Pro Shops Open Series will hold their first tournament of the season on Lake Okeechobee. On Saturday, January 23, 2021, the tournament will be out of Clewiston, FL, launching out of the framed Roland Martin Marina and Resort.

It will be interesting to see how much Okeechobee has changed since last January. On this same weekend last year, Scott Kirsch of Edgewater, FL, won the boater side of the event with a five-fish limit of 18 pounds. Mason Meder won the Co-Angler side of the event with a three-fish limit of 10.91 pounds.

The current weather forecast is for the mid to upper 70s, and the bass are in a pre and spawning pattern. Hitting the lake just right means big strings at the weigh-in. For example, in January 2018, Alex Terescenko of West Palm Beach, FL, had a five-bass weighing 27.77 pounds.

To register for the event, go to AmericanBassAnglers.com (or use this link).

This is a Pro/Am format that provides a path to the 2022 Ray Scott Championship on Lake Eufaula, AL, where the winning boater will be awarded $50,000 cash and a new Boat package valued over $70,000.  The winning co-angler at the Ray Scott Championship will win $25,000 cash and a new Triton/Mercury Boat package valued over $48,000.

The top ten (10) Boaters and top ten (10) Co-Anglers from each division by points after the Area Championship will qualify for the 2022 Ray Scott Championship.  Additionally, the Boaters and Co-Anglers finishing in places 1st through 5th and did not advance by divisional points, will also secure a slot in the Ray Scott Championship.

Each division holds four one-day qualifying events and advances anglers to a two-day Area Championship. The Angler of the Year, both Boater and Co-Angler from each division will receive their entries paid for the 2021 season.

Entry fees for the divisional one-day events are $210 for boaters and $105 for Co-Anglers. For the Area Championships, entry fees are $310 for boaters and $155 for Co-Anglers.

The Payout for all events is based on the number of entries. For one-day divisional events, a guaranteed $5000 will go to the winning boater based on a minimum of 60 boats. For each two-day Area Championship, a guaranteed $10,000 for boaters and $5,000 for co-anglers based on 100 boats.

Boaters are always guaranteed use of their boats at all events.  Co-Anglers registering as a package entry will receive priority entry into each event within their division.  Co-Anglers can secure their spot in an event by “linking” with a registered Boater.

Tom and Missy take the win and the GLine Battery $100 Bounty on Cooper River

We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day on the Cooper River with mild temperatures and sunny skies!  We had eight teams come out to compete with every team bringing fish to the scales.  Several teams commented on how clear the water was and how many big bass they watched swimming but couldn’t get to bite.  It seems that the most productive bite was on crank baits and worms.

Tom and Missy Bancroft took First Place with 5 largemouth bass weighing 8.15 lbs. earning $360.  We caught our bass on crankbaits in the morning and shaky head worms in the afternoon.

Seeing Red in the Winter Brings Rattling Action

In late winter and early spring, many anglers throw red-colored lures, particularly rattle baits, crankbaits, and soft plastics. So many people fish red temptations around Lake Sam Rayburn in Texas and Toledo Bend on the Texas-Louisiana line that many companies now sell “Rayburn red” colors in their lure selections -- red with gold stripes and some orangish-yellow added.
