Kerr Reservoir to Host the 2021 AFT Championship

ATHENS, Ala. – October 27, 2020 -- American Bass Anglers announced today the 2021 American Fishing Tour Championship will be hosted by Mecklenburg County Tourism and will take place Oct. 17-22, 2021, on Kerr Reservoir in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.

John H. Kerr Dam & Reservoir, also known as Buggs Island Lake, is a 50,000-acre lake extending 39 miles up the Roanoke River along 800 miles of wooded, cove-studded shoreline in Virginia and North Carolina.   Kerr Lake is Virginia's largest lake and one of the largest on the eastern seaboard.  It is relatively undeveloped and offers hundreds of miles of beautiful natural shoreline, punctuated by the John H. Kerr Dam, the 4th largest dam in the United States.

Mecklenburg County Tourism Coordinator Tina Morgan expressed her excitement as she learned she could finally share the news. "We are thrilled to be hosting the 2021 AFT Championship. Kerr Lake is the perfect destination for this tournament. The anglers should be excited to know that we are not only home to Virginia's largest lake, but we hold a couple of world record catches here too! Mecklenburg County is ready to receive you with open arms. I am confident we will make some great new friends and gain some return visits after you experience our unique amenities, charming small towns, and the great fishing here in lake country!"

Anglers from all over this country work hard to make the top 500 in points nationally on the Bass Pro Shops Fishing Tour to qualify for this event. This tour is the lowest cost of entry of any national fishing tour, and since the late 1970s has been offering large year-end championships for the weekend bass angler. The Championship is six days long, with the first three days as practice and three days of competition.

"The ABA Championship has not visited Kerr Reservoir in quite some time.  We are looking forward to renewing old acquaintances, making new friends, and giving our anglers a fabulous lake to compete on”, said Morris Sheehan, President of American Bass Anglers.

Since Kerr is in Virginia and North Carolina, anglers can fish the lake with a license from either state.  For Mecklenburg County Tourism information, visit: www.visitmeckva.com

Here is how to qualify for the 2021 Bass Pro Shops Fishing Tour Championship. First, join American Bass Anglers as a member. An ABA Membership allows you to compete in any qualifying tournament that ABA operates. Next, find a Bass Pro Shops Fishing Tour in your local area. To qualify, you must fish a minimum of four one-day qualifying events and compete in one two-day divisional Championship. Members can track their progress online at americanbassangles.com of their results and national point standings. The top 500 anglers nationally by points will be invited to compete in this Championship. The top 250 will be invited as boaters, and 251-500 will be invited to fish as non-boaters.
