Steve Perkins Takes the Area 7 Championship Win on Lake Texoma

ATHENS, Ala. – Steve Perkins of Velma, OK won the American Bass Anglers Open Series Area 7 Championship, held October 6th and 7th on Lake Texoma. Consistency is key to staying on top and Steve found himself with a good finish on the day, putting him within striking distance.  The weather changed from sunny to rain for day 2 and most anglers struggled to get the same bites, but for Steve, it turned his on. His bag of 5-fish came across the scales 16.81-lbs, the largest bag of the tournament, and put him on top of the leaderboard, earning him the $10,000.00 guaranteed win.  Steve’s 2-day total weight was 30.64-lbs.

“I caught all my fish flipping flooded willows.  The lake is up about 3 feet right now and my fish were shallow, really shallow.  I was up the Red River arm.  All my bites came on a baby brush hog.  On day 1 I had 9 keepers but today I had 14.  We didn’t have much sun today, just briefly this afternoon, but the fish were still there.  You guys run a great trail and I really enjoy fishing it,” said Perkins.

Landing in second place on the boaters’ side of the competition was Brandon Pedigo of Lawton, OK.  Brandon won the tournament last year and was right on the heels of Steve throughout the weekend.   At the end of day 1, he was sitting in second place with 15.45-lbs, following it up with 14.34-lbs on day 2 for a total weight of 29.79-lbs just ounces away from a second title.  His second-place finish also gave Brandon Triton Gold honors for being the highest placing member in the top 10.

“Today was a tough day on me.  I needed sunlight and it sure took its time today.  I knew with the passing storm we had before take off this morning that the clouds were not going away soon.  I didn’t have a fish in the boat until after 1:00 this afternoon.  I pulled up to my last spot and caught them.  I could have slept in today and come out here about 12:00 and nothing would be different.  I was focusing on ledges that had to have the right stuff.  I caught them using a Livingston Lures Deep Impact Series crankbait, both deep and shallow.  The EBS Technology really makes a difference with a tough fall bite,” said Brandon.

Coming in 3rd for the boaters was Dalton Pratt of Terrell, TX.  Dalton was the first boater to hit the scales on day 1 with 14.30-lbs.  He didn’t think it would amount to anything, but he came in on day 2 with 13.78-lbs for a 2-day total of 28.08-lbs.

“I had a decent day on day 1.  I didn’t think it was good enough to put me in contention to win because I know how good this lake can fish, but it hasn’t reached its peak for the fall bite yet.  The lake temperatures are still a bit warm but once we get a good cold snap it will really pick up,” said Dalton.

4th place for the boaters was Brett Stearnes of Joplin, MO with 27.72-lbs, and in 5th place was Donnie Benson of Eufaula, OK with 27.26-lbs.

For the co-anglers, Al Longoria of Pottsboro, TX weighed limits on both days, each of them anchored by a 5-lb kicker.  5.07-lbs the first day and 5.01-lbs the second day.  His 2-day total for 6-fish was 17.80-lbs earning him the $5000.00 guaranteed first place monies and big bass honors for the co-anglers.

“Man, I was due.  I’ve been looking forward to this tournament all season.  You guys put on a great event, your staff is always happy to see everybody, my wife is here today, and I have to start by thanking her for letting me come out and take part in something that I love to do.  What a weekend. The 2-5-lbers I caught are what did it for me and I didn’t catch them early.  Both of the big fish came mid-day.  I’m just so happy right now.  What a feeling,” said Longoria.

Finishing in 2nd place was Gary Fisher of Wylie, TX with a 3-fish limit on both days for a total of 16.87-lbs.

“I was throwing a Senko on the edge of weeds to catch my fish.  I had my limit both days by around 10 and started using any bait I could think of to try and cull up that would match the shad.  We were given weather of all sorts this weekend and it mixed things up quite a bit,” said Gary.

3rd place honors with another solid limit was Joe Perez of Kemp, TX with 6-fish for 13.36-lbs.

“We ran South and North.  We stayed with the same pattern all day because we were catching fish.  I had a great day 1 with my 8.80-lbs and was excited going into day 2.  I knew I had a good chance at it, but this field of anglers is tough to compete with.  I’m happy with the outcome but just needed a couple of good bites to get to the top,”  said Joe.

Finishing 4th was Randy Keating of Plano, TX with 12.95-lbs. Coming in 5th was Shane Cashman with 6-fish for 12.91-lbs.

The biggest bass caught for the boaters, and overall, was 5.98 lbs brought in by Terry Peacock. That catch earned him an extra check of $750.00 and earning him the Abu Garcia Big Bass Award.  Terry also received a new Revo X for his fish.
