Collins Chases More Triton Gold

ATHENS, Ala. – Albert Collins of Nacogdoches, TX won the American Bass Anglers Ram Truck Open Series Texas East Division, held April 28th at Sam Rayburn.

Running out of Brookeland, TX, the field of 87 boats and 69 coanglers left just after 6:00 AM on what was the first sunny and warm day in weeks.  The weather had been brutal for the last 5 weeks and mother nature finally gave in and let us have some fun in the sun.  For the boaters, 17 places took home a check and only 12.32 lbs took home a check.  For Rayburn this is a slow day.  Most anglers had plenty of bites, but keepers were hard to come by for some.

Albert Collins caught a five-fish limit weighing 17.21 lbs with all 5 of his fish looking like they were from the same family.  For the boater division victory, Albert took home a check for $5000.00, and up to $7,000 in Triton Gold.

“We had a pretty good day.  We started out on a deep spot and right off the bat my co-angler hooked a good fish.  Unfortunate that it didn’t make it to the boat.  We were between 12 and 22 feet.  I moved up shallow and threw a Delta Lures thunder jig through some grass targeting some ditches.  I caught a couple on a Mister Twister worm and everything seemed to catch them.” Said Albert.

In second for the boaters, Jeromy Francis of Livingston, TX brought in a five-bass limit weighing 16.89 lbs.  He collected a check for $1630.00.

“We ran up North this morning and stayed there all day.  We were fishing a little ridge.  It dropped off to 18-20 feet of water and we caught them on deep diving crank baits.  I was using a 6 XD and a Sixth Sense.  I swapped over to a Carolina rig for a little while and picked up a few more to end up with what I had.” Said Jeromy.

Shane Williams of Keithville, LA placed third for the boaters with a limit of five bass weighing 15.06 lbs and took home a check for $1090.00.00

“I ran up North too and fished a little shad spawn for a while with a blade.  Once the sun was up I switched over to flipping.  I never had a big bite today, but the fish were solid keepers. I lost 4 at the boat that may have made a difference but that’s part of it.  I probably had 20 keepers today.” Stated Williams.

In fourth, Glen Freeman of Zwolle, LA was nipping on Shane’s heels weighing 15.04 lbs and Cory Bono of Lake Charles, LA had a solid bag of 14.59 lbs to take the fifth-place honors.  As stated before, the big fish just didn’t seem to bite today.

In the Co-Angler Division, Tyler Forrest of Crosby, TX topped the field with a 3-fish limit at 11.02 lbs, anchored by his monster bass of 6.33 lbs.  His performance filled his pocket with a check for $1800 on the win.

“We started out shallow, my boater caught some on a whopper plopper and I picked up a buzz bait.  The first 30 minutes of the morning was incredible.  There were fish everywhere.  I swapped to a spinner bait for a while after the sun came up and we continued to catch them.  Later in the day we ran to mid lake and I pitched a black and blue mini craw at brush piles.  Every bite we had was a quality fish and one of the last casts I made before we came in was one more cull that got me to the weight I had.  You just can’t give up.  You never know which cast will be the one that matters.” Said Tyler.

Taking second for the co-anglers, Jeff Cox of Walker, LA came in weighing a 3-fish limit for 9.40 lbs. His placement earned him a check for $650.

“We did good.  I caught 3 fish on a mister twister and a few others on a Carolina rig.  I was able to cull a couple times to get the limit I brought in but I had a lot of fun today and we didn’t get wet this time.” Stated Jeff.

Rick Schroeder of Fayetteville, TX placed third among the co-anglers with JUST ONE FISH!  It was set on the scales locking in at 8.28 lbs taking big bass honors, placing him third, and earning the Abu Garcia Big Bass of the tournament!  $450.00 for placing and $330.00 for his big bass.

“I caught it in a brush pile in 25 feet of water.  My boater owns Kickin Bass Scent attractant and finally at 2:00 he gave me some to try.  On my very next cast I caught this fish.  I knew immediately she was a good one and when I finally got her in the boat I looked up at him and said I think I have a keeper!”  Stated Rick.

In fourth place among the co-anglers, Eddie Gilder of Sulphur, LA brought in three bass for 8.22 lbs.  Joseph Williams of Bridge City, TX finished in fifth place with three bass at 7.84 lbs.

The biggest bass for the boaters was caught by Mark Hooker of Montgomery, TX weighing in at 6.33 lbs for $850.00.  Well done to all!

Slated for June 9th, the next divisional tournament will be held again on Sam Rayburn launching from the Umphrey Pavilion.  At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance to the 2019 Ray Scott Championship, slated for the first week of April 2019 on Lake Eufaula, AL.
