Lance Eckford Takes the win on Badin
Athens, Al - Lance Eckford of Troutman, NC won the American Fishing Tour division 14 tournament on Badin Lake in Stanley County, NC with five fish weighing 17.20 pounds held on 03/03/2018.
It was a cold and blustery morning on Badin Lake with temperatures in the low 30’s and winds out of the NNW at 10 to 20 mph. Despite the cold and windy conditions a field of 21 anglers turned out to fish. The anglers enjoyed sunny skies throughout the day, with temperatures topping out in the upper 50’s. Water conditions were less than ideal, as recent rains muddied the water significantly, proving to present challenging conditions to the field.
Despite a slow bite due to conditions, Lance Eckford was able to put together a winning strategy by keying on secondary points and throwing a square bill crank bait. He reported that the morning bite was slow, but he got lucky and caught his first fish around 8:00 am and it was a 5 pounder. A great start to the morning, and the first clue to a winning pattern. Lance rounded out a limit by catching a second 5 pound largemouth at around 1:00 pm, and went on to cull 3 more times for a winning weight of 17.20 pounds, worth $539.00. That was just enough to edge out Charles Whitaker, also of Troutman, NC, who landed 5 bass weighing in at 16.25 pounds, worth $317.00. Charles also took home the big bass honors with a 5.73 pound kicker, worth $100.00.
The tough bite was a significant factor to the success of our first and second place anglers, as they were the only two 5 fish limits weighed in. The 3rd and 4th place anglers were both on the right size fish and could have easily taken the win with that elusive 5th fish. 3rd place went to Kevin Thomas of Indian Trail, NC with 4 fish weighing in a 14.88 pounds, worth $101.00 and 4th place went to Darrell Crumbley of Lexington, NC with 4 fish weighing in at 13.68 pounds, worth $72.00.
Congratulations to our top finishers. Division 14’s next event will be held on Lake Norman out of McCrary Creek access on Saturday March 31st, 2018
