Lake Russell Victory for Sherri and Jaris McGee
South Carolina’s Couples Series hosted a tournament on Lake Russell on Saturday, May 20. Twenty-two teams showed up for the 6:00 am safe-light blast-off. The day started with overcast and occasional fog, but heated up to 90 degrees as the sun peeked out before noon. Water temperatures were over 80 degrees by weigh-in. Some sound “fish care” techniques led to all but one of the 89 fish being released alive.
Sherri and her son Jaris McGee took first place honors with a 5-fish sack weighing 10.1 pounds. They caught their fish using spinnerbaits, shakey-head rigs and a DD-22 crankbait in and around “stumps.” Sherri and Jaris clearly enjoy their time together fishing the Couples Series. They are both quite experienced anglers. Sherri said Jaris was taken on his first fishing trip when he was two weeks old. Their winning fish were caught on a spot that her Dad had taken her when she was a young girl. How special!
Victoria and Dale Goff claimed second place with 5 fish at 9.6 pounds. Dale said they caught their fish “with their usual technique, dragging Baby Brush Hogs” on humps and points in 8 to 15 feet of water. The Goff’s success in this tournament makes them solid candidates for the South Carolina Couples Anglers of the Year award. They are also in great shape at the National level!
Morgan Burroughs and her Dad Scotty Bartley were in third place with 5 fish weighing 8.8 pounds. Their fish were caught with a hair jig, spinnerbait and crankbait. Scotty said their fish came in and around grass up river near the Lake Hartwell dam. Their nice sack included Scotty’s Men’s Big Bass at 2.9 pounds caught on the hair jig. When asked if their Weeble Custom Lure Company made these hair jigs, Scotty said that “they are certainly going to!”
Susan and John Mills took fourth place with 5 fish at 8.6 pounds. Susan’s 4.1 pound Ladies and Tournament Big Bass anchored their nice sack. Her big fish was caught with a crankbait on a point early in the day. The Mills success carries another example of great sportsmanship. Their angling travels were cut short in mid-day by boat engine trouble. The team of Missy and Tom Bancroft brought John Mills and their sack of fish to the scales in time for weigh-in. Then, Tom and John went back to recover Susan Mills and the boat. True to form, Susan was found drifting with a sluggish trolling motor and a fishing rod in her hands.
Welcome to new ABA members Georgette and Don Branham from Hodges, South Carolina. Also welcome to Genevra and Chris Fields from Mount Airy, Georgia. The Fields have fished with the Georgia Couples Series. And, welcome back to Patti and Bill Shreve. They claimed that quality time with their grandchildren had distracted them from bass fishing in the past few years.
Many thanks to the sponsors that provide drawing prizes for those teams that didn’t get “in the money:” Strickland Marine, Cabela’s, Yeti, Simpsonville Starbucks, Jervey Eye Group, Weeble Custom Lures, and Yo-Zuri. Buddy Siddal also provided two large bottles of Bass Boat Saver, a great product for hull cleaning and protecting. Patti and Bill Shreve gave samples of Formula II Skin Care Cream to all of the teams. They also donated a complete set of Formula II products for the drawing.
A small army of volunteers delivered an efficient set-up for the weigh-in and drawings. It also allowed for rapid dismantling of the gear and timely departure for an early dinner at the local Red Minnow Lighthouse buffet. Several teams enjoyed fellowship over a good after-tournament meal.
The South Carolina division’s next tournament will be on June 3, on Lake Greenwood, out of One Stop Marina.
