LeBrun Shines on Lake of the Pines

Nick LeBrun Of Bossier City, La won the American Bass Anglers Ram Truck Open Series Texas East Division, held May 20th at Lake of the Pines.

Running out of Cedar Springs Park near Ore City, TX, there was a 2-hour weather delay for lightning at takeoff but the skies finally cleared up and everyone left the ramp around 8 AM.  Weigh in was pushed back a bit and of the 55 boaters that took to the water, an astonishing 47 limits were brought to the scales.  For the boaters, 11 places were paid out and it took 17.97 pounds to make the cut.

LeBrun, from Bossier City, LA caught a five-fish limit weighing 26.29 lbs with a healthy 6.28-pound kicker.   For the boater division victory he took home a check for $5000.

“If you could script the perfect day on the water in your mind then go out and have it happen for you and be lucky enough it’s during a tournament, today was that day for me.  I can’t think of a single thing I would have done differently.  We had the delay this morning because of the lightning.  When we left out of here I made a pretty good run.  I fished shallow and deep.  I found a good school deep and caught a few from there and then moved to the banks and put my last fish in the box around 2:00.  My deep fish came on Sixth Sense DD Crush 300 and 500, shallow was a Pacemaker flipping jig.” LeBrun said.

In second for the boaters, Keith Jones of Texarkana, TX landed a five-bass limit weighing 23.06 lbs held up by what would be the big bass for the boaters at 7.06 lbs.  He collected $1000 for placing second and $550.00 for big bass.

“Well, it started out real well.  I was the last boat out at the last tournament and this time I drew boat 1 and I was happy about that, but usually when it starts well it doesn’t end well for me.  Today that’s not the case.  I caught fish on a frog up until the sun came out and then moved to flipping the edge of the bushes.  I caught a 4, a 6, and a 3 on the frog and then the rest came from the bushes.  The big fish came from the bushes too.” Said Jones

Wade Hudgens of Longview, TX took third for the boaters with a limit of five bass weighing 21.09 lbs.  Hudgens took home a check for $650.00

“I caught them all in 15-18 ft. of water on shell beds.  I didn’t have a fish in the box until 1:30 and the sun came out.  That’s when I finally caught them on a football jig.  They are pulling water in the lake and the level is dropping so I stayed out of the bushes.  I’m glad it finally did come out or I probably wouldn’t be up here right now.  I struggled up until then.”  Said Wade.

In fourth, Blake Whatley of Harelton, TX came in with a solid bag of 20.73 lbs.

Finishing 5th was Owen Windham of Little Elm, TX with 19.78 lbs.

In the Co-Angler Division, Randy Keating of Plano, TX won with three bass going 11.82 lbs.  His victory allowed him to walk away with a check for $1000.00.

“The day turned out pretty good.  We were catching them all day in shallow bushes on spinner baits and Z-craws.  I culled about 4 times but landed over 15 fish.  Not sure what it was but my boater would catch one and then I would.  I was lucky and they just happened to be a little bigger.” said Randy.

Taking second for the co-anglers, Richard Burkhart of Caddo Mills, TX came in weighing a 3-fish bag at 11.25 lbs. His catch was held down by a 5.44 lb kicker. His placement earned him a check for $400.

“It went good today but I was hoping my penalty wouldn’t keep me from winning.  There are two guys responsible for this.  Jackie Jayroe taught me how to catch them, and Drew Sloan put me on them.  We flipped bushes all day and the big fish bit.  I had 3 in the livewell and never could cull up.  I could have had more weight.” Richard stated.

Chuck Smith of Longview, TX placed third among the co-anglers. He had three fish weighing in at 9.73 lbs to earn a check for $300.

“We did pretty good.  My boater had us on fish for sure.  I got to cull about 3 times all on a swim bait.  We caught them all day and both had a great time.” Explained Smith

In fourth place among the co-anglers, David Connelly Trenton, TX brought in three bass for 9.19 lbs.

Cole Allen of Texarkana, AR finished in fifth place with three bass at 9.10 lbs.

The biggest bass for the co-anglers was caught by Aaron Uncapher of Tyler, TX weighing 5.49 lbs.  Aaron took home $145.00 for his catch.

Slated for May 13th, the next divisional tournament will be held on Columbus Pool from Columbus Marina, near Columbus, MS. At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance to the 2018 Ray Scott Championship, slated for the Red River in Shreveport & Bossier City, LA.
