Hughes Wins Stockton Lake Tournament
New American Bass Angler member, David Hughes won the 2017 season opener held October 8, 2016 on Stockton Lake. He brought in a five fish limit that weighed 11.70 pounds and won $500 plus $170 for his 4.02 pound Big Bass.
Second place went to Bruce Gandy with a five fish limit weighing 10.02 pounds earning him $288.
3rd place was Jeff Blackford weighing in 7.96 pounds and taking $94.
Anglers reported catching a high number of fish; however, the keepers were hard to find. Weigh-in “dock talk” was centered around big fish lost at the boat, coming from 4 to 5 anglers. Only two 5-fish limits were weighed in.
It was cool, about 41 degrees, with light fog at 7:00 a.m. when the tournament began. Winds were light and variable all day with temperatures rising to the upper 60’s and plenty of sunshine.
This was the first in a series of tournaments conducted by American Bass Anglers, Division 126, all held on Stockton Lake. This tournament series is a draw format and designed for the week-end angler, boaters and non-boaters from age 14. An ABA membership costing $25 per year is required and allows anglers to fish any ABA tournament. Entry fee for D126 tournaments is $70/angler; a $10 Big Bass option pot is offered.
The next tournament for this circuit will be November 5, 2016 on Stockton Lake using Old State Park as launch site. The full 2017 schedule can be seen at www.centralmidwestbass.com. The season will culminate with a 2-day Championship, date to be announced. Anglers fish each tournament for cash and prizes from area sponsors including Pete’s, the Outboard Doctor, Albers Marine, Happy O’s, Legacy Farm & Lawn and Antlers Ridge, as well as points that qualify them to fish a National Championship, date and location to be announced.
