New “Big Bass” Record for AFT D44
During an AFT D44 event on Lake Waconia located in the west metro area of the Twin Cities in early August, Bob Schill of Ramsey, Minnesota caught, weighted, and released a record breaking largemouth weighing 6.91 pounds.
D44 started as an MBAA district in 1990 and previously only had two other six-plus pound fish brought to the scales reported longtime Division Director George Miserendino. Miserendino reports, “tundra largemouth bass only have a 5-6 month growing season and any caught over five pounds is considered a trophy fish. Bob’s fish is definitely considered a “trophy fish” and worthy of special recognition."
Bob landed his trophy fish at 2:35 pm, with the weigh-in scheduled for 3:00 pm. Bob was using a drop shot rig, rigged with a small black Senko fishing a Coon Tail weed line in 12-14 feet of water. Once the fish was landed, Bob was too excited to fish for additional culling fish and headed to the weigh-in beach.
Parking next to Miserendino on the beach, Bob proudly reported he was not “bitter or despondent” and had a nice bag of fish including one very large fish. Other ABA competitors just rolled their eyes when Bob said he had one over six pounds, a very rare feat in Minnesota.
Bob’s trophy fish significantly contributed to his second place finish of 18.22. The winning bag went to Jeff Fritz who weighed in 18.48 pounds.
