Stracner Wins on Lay Lake

Josh Stracner of Vandiver, Alabama won the American Bass Anglers Ram Truck Open Series Alabama South division tournament, held July 16th on the Lay Lake.

Running out of Beeswax Creek Park near Columbiana, Alabama Josh caught five bass weighing 18.46 pounds with a 4.99 -pound kicker. “I fished the lower end of the lake, I caught four of the bass I weighed on a shakey-head and one on a frog. The bite was sporadic all day but I caught the 5 pounder around 1pm on the frog.” Stracner said. For the Boater Division victory, Stracner took home a check for $5,000.

In second for the Boaters, Alan Yarborough of Birmingham, Alabama landed five bass weighing 15.78 pounds with a 3.42 -pound kicker. “I fished from Beeswax Creek down to Paint Creek. I swam up a couple and flipped up three. I lost one today around 8 pounds.” Yarborough said. He collected $1,078 for the effort.

ABA pro-staffer Michael Smith of Andalusia, Alabama took third for the Boaters with five bass weighing 13.49 pounds. “I started out around mid-lake swimming a jig and throwing a frog around bluegill beds and caught a quick limit. Once the sun came out I started skipping docks with a Missile Baits Craw with a 1/4oz weight. I caught a pile of fish, caught a big spot under a dock, I thought I was going to get more big bites swimming the jig but it seemed like the bluegill weren’t spawning like they were a few weeks ago.” Smith said. He earned $719.

Finishing fourth, Chris Rutland of Wetumpka, Alabama landed a five-bass limit weighing 13.28 pounds.

Stephen Rogers of Prattville, Alabama rounded out the top five Boaters with five bass weighing 12.53 pounds.

The biggest bass for the boaters was caught by Jeremy Headley of Birmingham, AL that weighed 6.54 pounds.

“I caught that fish around 8:45am with a jig on a stump. I scrambled the rest of the day but couldn’t put anything else together." Headley said. Headley pocketed $430.

In the Co-Angler Division, Timmy Smith of Jemison, Alabama won with three bass going 7.07 pounds. He sealed his victory with a 3.20 -pound kicker.

“We fished down river a couple slews and I was throwing a 4 inch YUM Dinger flipping the outside edge of the grass. I want to thank my boater Chris Colley for a great day.”  Smith said. He pocketed $1,005 for his efforts.

Taking second for the Co-Anglers, Randy Harris of Phenix City, Alabama brought in a three-bass division limit weighing 5.70 pounds. “We fished down the river a little bit and then went up the river. I caught the biggest one out on a river ledge on a big tail worm in a brush pile and two on a shakey-head” Harris said. He collected $370 for the effort.

Jeremy Waldrop of Hoover, Alabama placed third among the Co-Anglers with three bass weighing 5.57 pounds. “We fished in spring creek and I caught two fish on a crankbait and one on a swimbait.” Waldrop said. He earned $246.50

In fourth place among the Co-Anglers, Sam Fish of Alexander City, Alabama brought in two bass for 5.33 pounds. Sam also caught the biggest bass for the Co-anglers weighing 3.63 pounds.

“The big fish came on a Senko and the other fish came on a fluke fishing grass lines. I lost another fish around 2 ½ to 3 pounds on the Senko that probably would have put me over the top but I’m thankful to have what I got.” Fish said. He pocketed an additional $115 for his efforts.

Kevin “Skip” Jackson of Eufaula, Alabama finished in fifth place with three bass at 5.15 pounds.

Slated for September 17th & 18th, the next tournament will be the two-day Area Championship held on Lake Eufaula out of Lake Point Resort State Park near Eufaula, Alabama. At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance the 2017 Ray Scott Championship, slated for Old Hickory Lake in Hendersonville, TN in April of 2017.
