A Clear Victory for Susan and John Mills

Twenty-three teams showed up for the last tournament of the South Carolina Couples’ season on Lake Greenwood on June 4.  The One-Stop Marina opened early to provide snacks, coffee and, of course, restroom availability. A pleasant 70 degree morning gave way to a warm 90 degree afternoon as the early signs of summer started to show.

Susan and John Mills of Leesville, South Carolina doubled the weight of the second place team with a 5-fish winning sack of 22.3 pounds. Susan brought in the Ladies Big Bass at 5.1 pounds. John’s 5.4 pounder took Men’s Big Bass. They culled through several nice fish to get to their winning weight. Susan said that at one point she was concerned that John was going to cull a 3-pounder she’d caught early. But, she ended up culling her own with her 5.1 pounder. They fished brush in 20 foot depths with Texas rigged Zoom Ol’ Monster worms.

Nicole and Brian Tidwell claimed second place with 5 fish weighing 11.3 pounds. Their success came early fishing buzz baits around docks.

Third place was captured by Jenna Elliott and Reed McGinn with a hefty 10.8 pound sack. Their fish came with worms on brush in 17 to 20 feet. Jenna and Reed joined the South Carolina Couples for the first time. They routinely fish with ABA’s neighboring North Carolina group.

April and Gary Michaud got fourth place honors with 9.3 pounds. The Michaud’s fish were also caught in 20 foot depths on brush.

The adventures continued with a downpour half-way through the weigh-in. Emergency responders would be proud of the rapid reaction of participants to protect tournament director Martha Goodfellow and her vital paperwork. While getting drenched themselves, their unselfish efforts with umbrellas saved the day.

Anglers headed across the street after weigh-in to Harris Landing Lakeside Grill for an end-of-season event. Amanda and Vince Smith were recognized with a crystal as Anglers-of-the-Year. Two first place finishes and solid results in other tournaments led to their accomplishment. Very close behind were the team of Victoria and Dale Goff. Their sixth place finish on Lake Greenwood just missed being enough to overtake the Smiths.

Another tight race was the competition for “smallest 5-fish limit” weighed during the season. Sheri and Lorne DeBord claimed this prestigious honor and a free pair of Costa sunglasses.

Tami Raper brought her first fish of the season to the scales. It was a hefty 3.3 pound spotted bass; a real beauty that put up quite a fight.

Bill Cain claimed Men’s Big Fish of the year. His Lake Hartwell 8-pounder yielded a Kissel Krafts rod coupled with a Lews Speed Spool baitcast reel.

Sheila Attaway took the Ladies Big Bass award for 2016. Her Lake Russell 5.2 pounder gave Sheila an ALX rod and a Lews Speed Spool reel.

Special thanks to the many local sponsors that have delighted South Carolina Couples this year.
