Amanda and Vince Smith Win on Lake Keowee

Thirty South Carolina Couples enjoyed pleasant conditions in their Lake Keowee tournament on April 23.   All of the 112 fish weighed were released healthy and happy.

First place was taken by Amanda and Vince Smith with 5 fish weighing 12.6 pounds.  Their limit included Vince’s 4.2 pound Men’s Big Bass.  Their fish were caught on two different patterns.  Three fish came on a “Scrounger” in three feet of water.  Two fish were caught sight fishing.  The Smiths live in Westminster, South Carolina.

Second place was claimed by Victoria and Dale Goff with a 12.1 pound limit.  Their hefty sack included Victoria’s 3.1-pounder and a 3.9 pounder for Dale.   The Goff’s sack was caught with Texas rigged Brush Hogs and lizards in 15 to 20 feet of water.  The Goff’s hometown is Lugoff, SC.

Third place went to Nicole and Brian Tidwell from Seneca, South Carolina.  Their 10.9 pound five-fish limit was caught with shakey-head rigs and sight fishing.

Fourth place:   Debbie and Bob Brown, Seneca, SC,  10.4 pounds.
Fifth place:   Missy and Tom Bancroft, Goose Creek, SC,  10.2 pounds
Sixth place (tie):  Tami and Jimmy Raper, Easley, SC,   10.1 pounds
Sixth place (tie):  Krista and Deron Johnson, Anderson, SC,  10.1 pounds

Ladies Big Bass was claimed by Susan Mills with a 3.3 pounder.  Her winning fish was caught with a shakey-head on the back corner of a dock in 3 feet of water.

Don Poteat and his granddaughter Olivia Lehn joined the South Carolina Couples.  Olivia reported having a good time with her grandfather.  They’ll be back for the Lake Russell tournament in May.

An “after tournament dinner” at Seneca’s El Alazan Mexican Restaurant was well attended.  The parking lot clearly took on a bass fishing theme as the angler’s rigs lined up!

Special thanks to the many volunteers who help make the South Carolina Couples Series a success.  Joe Richardson and Ron Carson brought in a custom tub system in an attempt to improve the weigh-in and insure the best possible fish care.  The Rapers got to the ramp extra early so that Jimmy could take on boat check at launch.  Sheri DeBord and Sheila Attaway tackled the photographs.  Amanda Smith also took and shared some great pics.  A small army of folks helped break down and stow equipment after the weigh-in.  And, Tom and Missy Bancroft’s vast array of tools got a trailer flat tire repaired and back on the road.

Thanks to the sponsors of the South Carolina Division.  Strickland Marine’s contribution of 3 gallons of Mercury Optimax oil for drawing prizes helps insure more people go home as winners.  Three wonderful recent stories of Strickland’s customer service were shared at weigh-in.

A Cabela’s tackle bag was the first prize picked up in the drawing for the “non-cash” anglers. Geico contributed a dozen pairs of their stuffed signature mascots for the drawing.  Costa contributed four packages with a hat and gift cards.   Yeti’s visors and tumbler were a hit.  And, Scotty Bartley contributed a package of Weeble Lures hand-made jigs.

South Carolina Couples Series next tournament is on Lake Russell on May 21.  This event is launching from Georgia’s Richard B. Russell State Park.
