Mark McCaig Takes Home $5000 at Lake Mitchell
Mark McCaig of Oxford, AL won the Alabama South Division Ram Truck Open Series opener at Lake Mitchell on February 6, 2015. McCaig brought in a 19.05 pound limit of Lake Mitchell bass to win $5000 in his first American Bass Anglers event of the year. He used a Big Bite Fighting Frog and a crankbait to secure is win. “This morning, I caught two of my fish in the river, out on some rocky stuff in the current. Then, I went a long time without a bite. I caught another good one about 11:00. At 2:45, I had four fish and I stopped at another spot where I caught a four pounder on a crankbait. After that, I went around the corner, flipped a little grass mat, caught another four pound, and came to the weigh in. My best fish came after 3:00, so I’m glad I was in the last flight,” said McCaig.
Chris Minor of Clanton, AL finished in second place with 17.56 pounds and brought in the 4.20 pound Big Bass earning $1279 for second place and $570 from the Big Bass Pot. Minor was swimming a jig and flipping for his second place catch. “I started out spot fishing to get a limit and go look for largemouth. I ended up weighing in one of the spots. That’s what killed me,” said Minor.
Third place in the Alabama South event went to Travis Northey of Troy, AL with 17.28 pounds winning $853. “I was down south and caught every one of them on a jig. I did like the rest of these boys and caught a limit of spots before looking for largemouth. I just never caught a largemouth,” said Northey.
