Scorches Win on Grand Lake

July 9th was one of the hot summer days you try to avoid when trying to fish eight hours, but 11 anglers braved the 100 degrees plus temperatures to compete in American Bass Anglers’ AFT Division #65 fourth tournament of the year on Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees. Six boats came in with a three-fish limit with First Place going to Bryan Jackson of Monett, MO, who bagged three fish weighing 10.35 lbs.  He also took “Big Bass” honors with a 4.60 lb. black bass.

Jackson Win on Grand Lake 

June 11, 2022. . . Well, it was a great day of fishing for Mr. Kevin Jackson of Monett, MO, who brought in 5 beautiful bass at a total weight of 18.45 lbs.  Second place went to Mr. Randy Baskins of Owasso, OK, with 5 alive at 16.15 lbs.  Big bass honors went to Bryan Jackson also from Monett, MO, with a 5.70 lbs bass.  Despite soaring temps, all fish were in good shape and were returned to the lake safe and sound.

Baskins Takes Win on Grand for AFT#65 Tournament

Eleven anglers launched from the Tera Miranda Ramp on Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees near Grove, OK.  Although the day started out with a cool 35 degrees, it was a beautiful day for fishing with a high reaching into the 70’s.   Steve Baskins of Owasso, OK, demonstrated that he is a bass master with another great tournament on Grand Lake taking first place this time with five beautiful bass weighing a total of 16.01 lbs.  He also garnered big bass honors with a fish weighing 5.46 lbs.

Kevin Jackson wins AFT Division 65 Tournament on Grand Lake

March 19, 2022. . . Eleven anglers launched from the Tera Miranda Ramp on a beautiful spring morning for Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees near Grove, OK.  Rumor has it that the bass were biting on jerk baits which is typical for this time of year and water temperature.  Four anglers brought back five-fish limits to the scales, but when the scales closed Kevin Jackson from Monett, MO, took first place with 15.65 lbs.

Baskins Takes 2021 AOY Title for AFT Division 65

(Monkey Island, OK)     ABA’s American Fishing Tour/Division 65 kicked off its two-day tournament on Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees on Saturday, September 25-26, 2021, with 12 anglers vying for the division’s “angler of the year” award plus 3 places in prize money and division trophies.  The third-place trophy went to angler Dirk Woods of Miami, OK, with an overall point total of 1,128 for the 2021 season.  The second-place trophy was awarded to Mike Franks of Bartlesville, OK,

Heintz Takes the Win on Grand Lake

Twelve anglers launched from the Tera Miranda ramp on Monkey Island near Grove, OK.  Seven of those anglers brought back five-fish limits to the scales, but when the scales closed Curtis Heintz from Olathe, KS, took the victory with a total weight of 17.64 lbs including a 5.95 lb. black bass for Big Bass honors.  He accredited his win to just fishing deep.  For the win, Heintz took home over $500 in prize money.

Dirk Woods Takes the Win on Grand Lake

Master bass angler Dirk Woods of Miami, OK, won the American Fishing Tour Division 65 tournament presented by American Bass Anglers.  A total of ten anglers turned out to brave early morning thunderstorms and breezy lake conditions to pursue Grand Lake bass.  Running out of Tera Miranda Ramp on Monkey Island, OK, Woods brought back five fish that locked in the scales at 16.10 lbs. and anchored by a 4.08 lb. kicker.  For the victory, Woods took home $363 in prize money.

Bryan Jackson Wins Division 65 Tournament on Grand Lake

Fourteen weekend anglers launched from the Tera Miranda ramp on Monkey Island to brave chilly weather conditions on Grand Lake.  Eleven of those anglers brought back five-fish limits to the scales, but when the scales closed Bryan Jackson from Monett, MO, took the victory with 18.71 lbs. including a 6.05 lb. mama bass for biggest bass honors.  For the win Jackson took home $535 in prize money.

Wesley Potter Wins Division 65 Tournament on Lake Eucha

Due to flooded conditions on Grand Lake of the Cherokees, AFT Division 65 was forced to change its first tournament destination to nearby Lake Eucha.  Eucha is a City of Tulsa water supply lake and has a spillway which keeps it at a steady level and generally clear water.  Eucha was tough that Saturday for the 12 anglers who were competing for cash prizes totaling over $700, but the lake was particularly kind to angler Wesley Potter of Colcord, OK, who was able to bring in the only five-fish limit for the first-place win of 14.27 lbs of black bass.

Heintz Captures ABA Division 65 Angler of the Year


American Bass Anglers’ AFT Division #65 had great weather for its two-day classic tournament held on September 26-27, 2020, on Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees with a good turnout of 13 boats.  Mr. Curtis Heintz of Olathe, KS, took Division #65’s 2020 First Place honors with a total of 1141 points for the season and also garnering him Division #65’s “Angler of the Year” and a spot to compete against other divisional anglers in the annual AFT national tournament held this October on Old Hickory Lake in Hendersonville, TN.

Baskins Scoops Win on Grand Lake

Fifteen anglers competed against each other Saturday, July 11, 2020, on Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees in northeast Oklahoma for American Bass Anglers AFT division #65’s last regular season tournament .The tournament turned out to be a good day on the water for Steve Baskins of Owasso, OK, who pulled a nice three fish limit of 9.73 lbs. to take first place.  Steve made a comment that the fish got spooked into his boat.  Must be a secret fishing language only anglers understand.  The Covid-19 pandemic had pushed Division 65’s last tournament into some hotter fishing months, so I’m sure that the early morning bite was very important to getting spooked.

Jackson Takes Big Win on Grand Lake

Bass Pro Shops Fishing Tour Division 65’s tournament on Grand Lake held on Saturday, June 13, 2020, proved to be a scorcher of a day with temps quickly reaching into the 90s.  Despite the heat, Bryan Jackson of Monet, MO, taught other Grand Lake anglers a major lesson bringing in 5 beautiful bass to the scale weighing 19.84 lbs.  Second place honors went to Curtis Heintz of Olathe, KS, with 18.25 lbs of fish.  Big Bass honors went to Division 65 newcomer Randy Baskins of Owasso, OK, with a beautiful 6.21 lb mama bass.  Cash prizes totaling almost $700 were distributed among the 3 winners.

Woods Dominates on Eucha Lake

Anglers competing in American Bass Anglers’ Division 65 tournament trail were eager to get back on the water after the cancellation of two tournaments due to the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.  The May 23, 2020, tournament was moved to Lake Eucha near Jay, OK, which was good to local angler Dirk Woods of Miami, OK, as he was able to bring in 4 fish to the scale weighing a total of 10.04 lbs.  Woods also received “Big Bass” honors weighing a 4.68 lbs beautiful, mama bass.

Heintz Wins Big on Grand Lake

American Bass Anglers-Division 65 had its first tournament on a muddy Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees on Saturday, March 21, 2020, with 14 boats braving the 30 degree weather.  Rumor has it that the winner Curtis Heintz, of Olathe, KS, ran his new Ranger bass boat all the way to the Pensacola Dam to find some biting fish.
