I've been lucky to know the folks at TRIK FISH for a few years and they are my main sponsor. They have one of the best fluorocarbon lines on the market, and Trik Fish line has never let me down!!!!
COSTA DEL MAR is also one of my sponsors, what a great group of people and great product. A very important tool that every angler must have.
What Uby does for a living:
Resort Recreation Auditor
What you should know about Uby:
I'm married to my wonderful wife Judy and have 3 children (Shane, Crystal, and George).
I've worked for the same company since 1989. I was actually a bass fishing guide on a private lake for over ten years.
I love to fish and hunt everything!!! Literally Everything!!!!
How Uby started fishing
It's pretty crazy how things work, nobody in my family fishes or hunts. I started fishing when I was 5 years old. I remember going to the beach with my parents and my brother and walking down a jetty. I saw a man sitting on the rocks with a line between his toes and a hand reel next to him, he was also cleaning a fish. I asked my dad what he was doing, and he explained to me that he was fishing. I told my dad I wanted to do that. As I stated before, my dad was not a fisherman, so he borrowed a cane pole from a friend and took me back to the beach where I stood in the shallows all day with that cane pole trying to get a fish to bite, with no success. On the way home I asked my dad If we could go back the next day. We didn't go back the next day, but that's all it took. I was HOOKED for life!!!!
Aspirations or goals with fishing
I enjoy fishing tournaments as a co-angler, but hope to start fishing as a boater next year.
Favorite way to fish
I love fishing Top Water baits. Watching a fish blow up on a bait never gets old!
Most exciting fishing experience
I had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica's Golfo Dulce and fish out of Crocodile Bay. I caught a 120 lb Pacific Sailfish on a 12 weight fly rod.
How Uby preps for a tournament
I do some research on line, prefish with some friends that have boats, check all of my equipment, and adjust my tackle according to the lake and season.
Three favorite search baits
My three favorite search baits are the swimming frog, the lipless cranckbait, and the swim bait.
Best tournament finish and what you did that day when you were fishing.
My best finish on this series is 4th place, and I have finished 4th several times. I was using Top Water Baits and swim baits.
Most challenging part of tournament fishing
The most challenging thing about fishing as a co-angler, is trying to adapt to fishing places you have not fished before.
When tournaments don't go my way
There are going to be plenty of days that don't go your way. You have to learn from them and find the positive things. Remember, You're Fishing!!!!
Advice to give to an aspiring tournament angler:
First I would say that you learn a lot from fishing as a co-angler. Different techniques and styles and makes you versatile! Fish every chance you get and don't be afraid to try different things.
I had a boater friend of mine that once got paired up with a beginner angler, he was fishing off shore structure with lipless crank baits. The co-angler only had a flipping stick with 65lb braid, so he tied a crank bait to it. The guy won the co-angler side!!!!!
Some shared general bass fishing techniques for people just getting into the sport
Easy baits to use that catch quality fish, are top water baits, and fluke style baits.
