How Marty started fishing

When I was a recruiter there was a old saying, make mission and go fishing. I really didnt have any hobbies at the time and one day I stopped by Wheeler Dam wasting time walked up the sidewalk and i remembered my dad used to come here and catch minnows. There were alot of folks fishing underneath the canopy up close to the dam so I went to WalMart and bought a reel. Every day i would stop at the dam and fish for a few hours. I would see Bass boats come up to the dam and fish , it was then i decided I had to have a Bass Boat. My first boat was a Challenger bass boat. It was a beautiful boat and very reliable. I statrted fishing Friday Night tournaments and became hooked on bass fishing. The competition on those Friday night tournaments was tough. There were alot of good fisherman fishing those Friday niters. After a few years I actually won my first tournament. In all reality, I  almost didnt weigh in that night.  I knew if if I could fish against those guys i could fish against anyone. After several years of Night fishing, I decided I needed a bigger better boat so I sold the Challenger and bought a new Nitro and fished the Heartland Angler Series. The competition got bigger and I continued to learn more about bass fishing along the way. I consider myself as a very competitive person, however, I am really just an average fisherman that loves to fish. I love the competitiveness and being on that boat is relaxing where I can forget about the every day stresses of the job. Bass fishing is enjoyment.

Aspirations or goals with fishing

To be competitive!

Favorite way to fish

My favorite way to fish is constantly casting a crank bait, or spinner bait. When the hot weather gets here and things slow down i have to talk myself into slowing down.

Most exciting fishing experience

How Marty preps for a tournament

Always spool new line on the reels. Tie on the bait I think is going to be used.

Three favorite search baits

Best tournament finish and what you did that day when you were fishing.

Most challenging part of tournament fishing

The most challenging part for me has been between the hours of 1030 and 1130 am. Keep putting the bait in front of them.

When tournaments don't go my way

I dont get upset if I am not catching the bigger fish. Just being on the water is an enjoyment.

Advice to give to an aspiring tournament angler:

Always stick with your initial plan. Odds are the bait that you thought would be the one usually is.
