What you should know about Matthew:

back when I was skinny, I was a sponsored rock climber and lived out of my truck travelling the US and abroad.

How Matthew started fishing

I lived with my grandmother for a portion of my childhood on Clark Lake Michigan and would go fishing with my uncles

Aspirations or goals with fishing

my son is only 5, but I hope I live long enough to enjoy fishing a buddy tournament with him

Favorite way to fish

flipping a jig

Most exciting fishing experience

my uncle Bruce was killed by a kid who was texting and went over the double yellow lines and struck him head on. He was the first person to really introduce me to fishing with artificial lures. I wanted to be alone when i heard he died, so I grabbed a few rods and went down to the rocky banks of a river near our house. It was an amazing fishing day. I caught a bunch of smallmouth and then hooked into a giant tiger musky, which i landed on a small squarebill. I felt like Bruce was there at that moment. It was magical.

How Matthew preps for a tournament

sleep is usually the best thing for me. If I don't sleep, I am a hot mess.

Three favorite search baits

Best tournament finish and what you did that day when you were fishing.

I've won several, and each time the secret was staying relaxed and not spinning out

Most challenging part of tournament fishing

When tournaments don't go my way

I go home to my wife and son and seeing them reminds me I am still a winner.

Advice to give to an aspiring tournament angler:

Don't believe the hype. 99% of the "Pros" out there got to where they are because they were born rich and didn't have to work their entire lives. Nothing can prepare you for winning a tournament better than time on the water, so unless you are born rich, get yourself an education so you can buy a boat and fish when you have free time.
