How Joel started fishing

Realize I was going to get too old to keep playing football, basketball and baseball, so I started fishing.  I needed something to compete in for along time.   Fishing and hunting does it for me.

Aspirations or goals with fishing

I've met alot of them, but winning a big tournament is always in the goals.  I would like to do alot more work for my sponsors.  Even after my fishing stop, I would still love to stay in the business.

Favorite way to fish

Fishing a jig.  It puts you up close and personal with the fish.  Its an Art.

Most exciting fishing experience

Winning my first BFL tournament on Bob Sandlin.   I had the tournament won in the first 23mins. of the day.

How Joel preps for a tournament

Weeks before on the internet and youtude.  One day of practice to run the lake.

Three favorite search baits

Swim jig, spinnerbait and squarebill

Best tournament finish and what you did that day when you were fishing.

Won the East div. Ram Truck Series on Bob Sandlin.  I found them schooling the day before off a point falling off into 25' for water.  5mins. before take off, I changed to a 6XD crankbait to maybe catch a bigger fish below the school.  It worked!  10.39lb. bass hit the crankbait and it was up hill from there.

Most challenging part of tournament fishing

The weather.  It is the most unpredictable think out there and you have no control over it.

When tournaments don't go my way

Keep fishing.  Thats all you can do.  Keep your head down and never relax. Put it all on the table and at the end of the day.  Its done and let whatever happens, happens.

Advice to give to an aspiring tournament angler:

Go with as many different people as possible to learn different ways to fish.  From that point, make how you fish and the way you fish PERSONAL.  You can not be successful fishing like somebody elas.  You CAN Be the best fisherman you can be.  Go fishing alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some shared general bass fishing techniques for people just getting into the sport

Learn how to check water clarity.  That will give you and idea as to what color lure to use.  Learn to fish a jig, because that bait will put a big fish in the boat consistantly.  But, be good with all techniques and let the fish tell you would they want and how they want it.
