Bill Amis of Shawnee, KS took top honors at last Saturday’s ABA tournament on Stockton Lake with a 5-fish limit that weighed 18.99 lbs. He was leading for Big Bass for a while with a 6.77 lb black, but that lead soon went down when his boater partner weighed in. That partner was Brian Thompson of Springfield, MO who took 2nd place with a weight of 18.05 lb, anchored with Big Bass of the tournament, weighing 6.83 lbs. Amis took $468 for 1st place; Thompson pocketed $477 for 2nd place and Big Bass.
Amis and Thompson were paired up at the random draw that took place just before launch. They had seen each other before at different fishing events, but had never officially met. They proved to be the perfect match of boater/non-boater. Thompson asked if there was any place Amis wanted to go. Amis’ reply was “Why would I want you to change your plans? That wouldn’t be smart.”
Thompson, in return was a perfect boater, offering to Amis the bait that was catching fish, keeping the boat where both anglers could cast and then, of course, getting the net. Just imagine what Thompson was thinking when he netted fish after fish, knowing those were fish he wasn’t going to catch. Both men said they had a good time fishing together.
The bait they used was a Brian Thompson special he calls the Graduate School. It’s an A-rig with some extra wires and baits on it. Look for pictures of the bait at www.centralmidwestbass.com. Thompson owns and operates The Outdoor Experienced, a sporting goods store located at 2050 S. Campbell or call (417) 889-7283.
Third place went to Eric Craft of Erie, KS. Craft weighed in a 5-fish limit that went 13.46 lbs, just ahead of 4th place finisher, Jay Carter with a bag that weighed 13.25. Craft is currently leading in the race for D126 Angler of the Year. There are two more 1-day tournaments, May 10 and May 11. The D126 2-day Championship will be held June 7-8. 2014.
ABA was designed for the week-end angler and is open to boaters and non-boaters. It is a draw format with partner pairing taking place the morning of each tournament. Anglers from age 14 can enter these tournaments. Prizes for this event were donated by Happy O’s Resort, Eagle Claw Tackle, Albers Marine, The Outboard Doctor, Antlers Ridge and Pete’s Convenience Stores.
