David Goestenkor Takes Stockton Lake 2014 Opener
(Left to Right: 2nd - Brandon Rummel, 1st - David Goestenkor, 3rd - Eric Craft)
American Bass Anglers Division 126 offered anglers the opportunity to “try out” the circuit by holding an open tournament September 28, 2013 on Stockton Lake. Several guys took advantage of the offer, coming from as far away as Indianapolis. The 24 competitors made up a diverse group ranging in age from 15 to 75, male and female, representing not only Missouri, but also Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Indiana.
Stockton resident and new member, David Goestenkor, took as easy win with a five-fish limit that tipped the scales at 14.42 pounds, anchored with Big Fish of the day, a 6.31pound black. Goestenkor fished both ends of the lake, but reported catching his fish in the upper end flipping soft plastic in the flooded bushes. The day’s catch paid off well as Goestenkor took home $753.
Brandon Rummel of Everton took second with a five fish limit that weighed 12.37 pounds. Erie, Kansas angler Eric Craft was third with 11.95 pounds. Fourth place went to Kyle Kiister of Pittsburg, KS with 10.03 pounds. These anglers reported catching their fish in the mid-lake area, using crank baits and flipping the flooded bushes.
“This was an exciting tournament,” reported tournament director, Becky Minor. “It was the first tournament of the 2014 season and an Open tournament so we had several new faces in the crowd. We also welcomed our youngest participant, Tristian Smith who is 15 years old.”
D126 will hold seven more one-day qualifying tournaments and a two-day division championship all on Stockton Lake. The next tournament will be November 16, 2013. The 2014 complete schedule can be found at www.centralmidwestbass.com along with results of previous tournaments or call Becky at (620) 421-2935.
ABA was designed for the week-end angler and is open to boaters and non-boaters. It is a draw format with partner pairing taking place the morning of each tournament. Anglers from age 14 can enter these tournaments. They will be fishing for cash and prizes as well as points that qualify them to fish a National Championship. Prizes for this event were donated by Happy O’s Resort, Eagle Claw Tackle, Apounders Marine, The Outboard Doctor and Antlers Ridge.
