Cooper takes early lead in AFT championship

ATHENS, Ala. – Terry Cooper jumped out in front of a tightly packed group on Day 1 of the 2012 American Fishing Tour National Championship tournament, presented by American Bass Anglers, held Oct. 24-26 on Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees.

Running out of Tera Miranda Harbor on Monkey Island near Grove, Okla., the Hamburg, Iowa, angler found a five-bass daily tournament limit weighing 13.98 pounds on Oct. 24. He anchored his bag with a 4.73-pounder, the second largest bass landed on the first day of competition.

“I found a fish here and there,” said Cooper explaining how he took his first lead in nine AFT championship tournament competitions. “We caught them off and on all day long, but we caught them all on the same bait. The clouds helped a lot. We fished in less than 10 feet of water fairly close to the marina.”

Holding second among the 219 competitors, Paul A. Smith brought in five bass for 13.36 pounds. Close behind, Bryan Klinger pulled into third place with a five-bass bag for 13.03 pounds.

Anchoring his first day effort with a 6.14-pounder, the largest bass landed on Day 1, Terrance Knueppel holds fourth place. He brought in four keepers for a total of 12.76 pounds on the first day, followed by Toby L. Lillard with five bass and 12.68 pounds.

These competitors represent some of the best amateur bass anglers from 41 states. They earned the right to compete in the AFT national championship tournament by accruing points in various events held by 80 AFT divisions across the country.

The three days of action continues through Oct 26 when one angler will take home a new fully rigged Triton bass boat powered by a Mercury outboard and a MotorGuide trolling motor, a package that retails for more than $60,000.

One of the top bass lakes in the United States, Grand Lake spreads through 46,500 acres of the Ozark Mountains of northeastern Oklahoma. It stretches about 64 miles along Grand River, also called the Neosho River. With numerous coves and points, the deep, rocky lake offers anglers varied cover along its 1,300-mile shoreline. Several feeder streams enter the system.

Home of the largest multiple arch dam in the world, Grand Lake contains great largemouth and spotted bass populations plus a few smallmouth bass. It produced largemouth bass approaching 11 pounds and smallmouth bass topping 5 pounds in the past. The lake record spotted bass weighed 3.2 pounds.

The 2012 National Championship is presented by American Bass Anglers and sponsored by the Grand Lake Association, Tera Miranda Resort, Triton Boats, Mercury Marine, Royal Purple, Early Times Kentucky Whisky, Busch Beer, Carlisle Tire & Wheel, Odyssey Batteries, Anglers’ Advantage Insurance, Keep Alive, ProBass Networks, Rejuvenade, US Reel, and Simms Outdoors.

The American Fishing Tour offers low cost, close to home bass tournaments that are designed for the weekend angler.
