Father and Son Team Win Military Team Bass Tournament

by: Debra Talley

Final Results (PDF)

Byrdstown, TN..... Father and son team, Mike and Jake Gipson are headed to Costa Rica courtesy of Early Times Whisky and JDC Marketing for their 1st place finish at this weeks` Military Team Bass Tournament in Byrdstown, TN. The duo started competitively fishing in tournaments just the last few years, and found success today in the 18th annual event. Son, Jake, who is a Political Science major at the University of Florida in Gainsville, was supposed to be on a plane to South Africa today until the team found themselves in the running yesterday and got permission from his professor to depart a day late. "My professor said, if you miss that flight on Friday, you`d better win that tournament! So, I couldn`t let him down", said Jake.

Mike, retired Air Force, lives in Niceville, Florida and calls Toho and the Harris Chain his home waters. "We`ve fished the Military Tournament 5 times and only missed Eufaula in the last 6 years. We`ve finished about 40th or 41st for most of those years, so winning today is great! We caught most of our fish on Brush Hog, green pumpkin or watermelon red with 5/16`s and 3/18`s weights, mostly in the bushes and vegetation in 4 to 6 feet of water. We caught our limit today and the first day and only caught 4 the 2nd day that were all a little smaller. We`ve only been deep sea fishing a couple of times, so we`re really looking forward to this trip to Costa Rica!", said Gipson, "I can`t wait to call my wife, Cherie and son, Mark, and tell them we won."

John Carter Joins Roster of Stars at Military Event

Athens, AL…..John Carter is no stranger to the stage, especially in Nashville, Tennessee, where crowds flock to here him play! But on Monday, May 5th, he’ll entertain the military from across the US as they arrive for the 18th annual Military Bass Tournament in Byrdstown, Tennessee!

The military anglers, as well as the great folks in the surrounding area, are in for a real treat when entertainers from across the US take the stage to entertain with song and dance in a USO Show planned just for them.

John Carter’s dream has not always been to excel as a country music artist. Towering at 6’5, his original dream was to play football, and the Marine Corps offered an opportunity to continue his passion after high school. “You might say that my ego got the best of me. The recruiter dared me by saying I could play if I was good enough, and the next thing I knew I was signing papers.”

Throughout his 10 years in the military, John has had a range of positive experiences. While aboard ship as a helicopter door gunner for six months, John spent his off-duty hours teaching himself to play guitar. “As a kid, my dad played the guitar; but I was always intimidated to try it. I guess I didn’t think I could do it. It was embarrassing to learn to play the guitar on a ship. I would stay awake late at night and practice in the hanger so I wouldn’t bother anyone. I thought of myself as that next door neighbor learning to play the trombone.”

Military Team Bass Competitors To Be Entertained By BAMA Girls

Athens, AL…..The 18th Annual “Military Bass Team Tournament” promises to be one to remember. Surely what will be a highlight of the weeks’ activities, is a USO show featuring the “BAMA Girls”, presented by tournament host, American Bass Anglers. The show, to be held at 7:30pm on Monday, May 5th, the competitors’ arrival day, will follow dinner to be held at Pickett County High School in Byrdstown, Tennessee.  “The show is a USO-type production which features songs of all types”, states Debra Talley, show producer and National Marketing Director for American Bass Anglers. “Whether you’re into pop, R&B, or country, we’ve covered it all. The former Miss Alabamas – all entertainers - present a fast-paced, high energy, song and dance show that seems to never stop. The show is filled with lots of surprises for the soldiers. For anyone that has ever watched on TV, excerpts from USO Shows featuring Bob Hope, it will bring back memories of Ann Margaret and Marilyn Monroe as they crooned their own renditions of love songs to the soldiers stationed so far from home. It was a time when mail took weeks or even months to arrive and email was not even a figment of one’s imagination. An audience of all ages will find something to enjoy whether it’s a walk down memory lane, or the latest, hottest, most tantalizing songs being played on MTV today”, says Talley.
