Ray Neighbors Whacks 22+, Takes First Place

Division 47, Arkansas held its fifth qualifying tournament of the 2012 season on Lake Ouachita 21 Jan 2012.  Overcast skies, wind and dropping temperatures made for a chilly day of fishing.  The water temp dropped several degrees, down into the upper 40’s, since our last visit to Lake Ouachita two weeks ago.  The shad in some parts of the lake have made major moves since two weeks ago leaving some areas that had large concentrations of shad now barren which may have accounted for less fish weighed-in.  28 anglers weighed-in 68 fish for a total weight of 153.08 lbs.

Ray Neighbors of Haskell, Arkansas won in a commanding fashion and took home $725.00 with 5 bass that bent the scales to 22.48 lbs including Big Bass of the day at 5.05 lbs.  Ray caught his fish on jigs and yes…an A-rig.  Danny Gwinn of Mount Ida, Arkansas hauled in second place with a total weight of 13.37 lbs.  Eddy Robertson of Hot Springs, Arkansas, fishing his first tournament of the 2012 Division 47 season, rounded out the top three with 12.76 lbs.

2012 AFT National Championship heads to Oklahoma

ATHENS, Ala. – For the first time ever, American Bass Anglers will hold its American Fishing Tour National Championship tournament in Oklahoma.

The 2012 ABA AFT National Championship tournament will be held Oct. 24-26 at Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees in Grove, Oklahoma. Anglers may practice on the lake for three days prior to the event.

The tournament pits the top weekend anglers from 40 states who earned the right to compete in the national championship by qualifying through 80 divisional events held throughout the year. The top 500 points holders from those 80 divisions may compete in the national championship for bragging rights and a share of the more than $150,000 total purse. The winner will receive a new fully rigged Triton bass boat powered by a Mercury outboard and a MotorGuide trolling motor, a package that retails for more than $60,000.

“We are delighted to be bringing our AFT National Championship to Grand Lake,” said Debra Talley, ABA national marketing director. “We’ve had championship events in Texas before, but never in the state of Oklahoma. The anglers are excited because it’s such a central location. Anglers from all over the country will be able to come to it. Some anglers haven’t been able to fish championship tournaments in the past because the venues have been too far away. They are excited that the 2012 event will be much closer to them.”

The national championship week actually features two major events. The 2012 AFT Angler of the Year Final Round Fish-off kicks off the week on Oct. 20, 2012, at a location that will be annouced in July 2012. The AOY event features the top points earners from various AFT divisions across the country fishing for another Triton/Mercury/MotorGuide boat package and other prizes. The anglers will get one day to practice on the tournament lake before the AOY tournament.
