Tripoli wins on Chautauqua Lake

ATHENS, Ala. – Donald Tripoli of Webster, NY won the American Bass Anglers Open Series NE two-day area championship, held 9/29-9/30 on Chautauqua Lake.

Running out of Mayville State Park in Mayville, NY, Tripoli caught two-day total of 32.53 pounds. He anchored his bag with a 4.81-pound kicker. For the Boater Division victory, Tripoli took home a check for $10,000.

“I fished out in front of the state park in about 8-10 feet of water with a black and blue ¾ oz. Jig. I just let it soak and moved it real slow. I fished the same place and the same thing for both days,” Tripoli said. Tripoli also won the 2017 two day championship.

In second for the boaters, Michael Nesbitt of St Paris, OH landed a two-day total weight of 30.35 pounds with a 3.68-pound kicker. He collected $700 for the effort.

“I skipped a 3/8 oz jig under docks, all the fish came out of two feet of water or less,” Nesbitt said.

Brad Brodnicki of Amherst, NY took third for the boaters with a two-day total weight of 29.42 pounds. He anchored his catch with a 4.73-pound kicker to earn $600.

“On day one I mainly fished docks all day, day two I started flipping docks in the morning and went to flipping weeds with a big black and blue flipping jig,” Brodnicki said.

Finishing fourth, Chuck Main of Ellwood City, NY caught a two-day total of 29.12 pounds. Mike Quinlin of Mooresville, IN rounded out the top five boaters with a two-day total of 28.51 pounds.

The biggest bass for the boaters was caught by Harold Miller Jr. of Washington, PA that weighed 5.55 pounds and Miller pocketed $400.

In the Co-Angler Division, John Ciavaglia of Pittsford, NY won with a two-day total of 10.51 pounds. He sealed his victory with a 4.57 -pound kicker to pocket a check for $5000.

“I caught all of my fish on a weightless Texas rigged green pumpkin senko,” Ciavaglia said.

Taking second for the co-anglers, Roland Beaulieu of Swanton, VT brought in a two-day total weighing 9.45 pounds. He collected $350 for the effort.

“I went out there and fished as hard as I could. I used a “The Deal” Ned rig and then some topwater” Beaulieu said. “

Kevin Tangeman of Chickasaw, OH placed third among the co-anglers with a two day total going 8.76 pounds to earn $300.

“I caught 4 bass all doing something different. I caught one on a jig one on a dropshot one on a weightless worm and one on a frog,” Tangeman said.

In fourth place among the co-anglers, Thomas Melanson of Waltham, MA brought in a tournament total of 8.23 pounds including a 5.00-pound kicker. Stephen Carden of Franklin, MA finished in fifth place a tournament total of 7.78 pounds.
