 Hughes wins on The Potomac River

ATHENS, Ala. – Jesepth Hughes of King George, VA won the American Bass Anglers Open Series NE region tournament, held May 12th on the Potomac River.Running out of Smallwood State park near Marbury, Maryland, Hughes caught five bass weighing 20.38 pounds. For the Boater Division victory Hughes took home a check for $5000.

“I went blind bed fishing,” Hughes said. “I threw a trick worm in June bug with a 3/8oz weight. “

In second for the boaters, Joe Thompson of Coatesville, PA landed a five-bass tournament limit going 18.96 pounds with a 5.38-pound kicker. His 5.38lb big bass was also the big bass for the tournament. He collected $1400 for the second place finish and $710 for the big bass for a total of $2110.

“I got my limit in about 45 minutes,” Thompson said. “I culled about 6 times. I flipped pads in matawoman creek. I threw a green pumpkin brush hog with the tail dipped in orange.

Samuel R. Rineer of Aberdeen, MD took third for the boaters with five bass going 18.59 pounds. He anchored his catch with a 4.67-pound kicker to earn $950.

“I only got 6 keepers all day,”Rineer said. “I threw a 1 minus in chartruse shallow over grass all day.”

Finishing fourth, Ryan J. Ingalls of Fairfax, VA landed a five-bass limit for 18.02 pounds including a 4.57-pound kicker. Danny Moffat of Hughesville, MD  rounded out the top five boaters with five bass at 17.13 pounds topped by a 4.16-pound kicker.

In the Co-Angler Division Gregory G Callas of Centreville won with three bass going 11.13 pounds. He sealed his victory with a 4.07-pound kicker to pocket a check for $1700.

“I only caught 3 keepers all day” Callas said. “I got two on a 3/8 oz chatter bait in green pumpkin and white. One of those $20 lures. I got my third on a drop shot with a green pumpkin worm.”

Taking second for the co-anglers, Danny Moffat Jr of White Plains brought in a three-bass division limit weighing 11.09 pounds. He collected $650 for the effort.

“I threw a chatter bait and a swim jig,” Moffat said. “Both were in black and blue with a 3/8 oz. weight. I only got 6 keepers all day.”

Cort W Gardner of Jessup, Md placed third among the co-anglers with threebass going 10.40 pounds to earn him $450.

“I fished over grass all day,” Gardner said. “I threw a green pumpkin french fry with the tail dipped in chartreuse. I caught about 10 keepers.”

In fourth place among the co-anglers, David Wilt of Liitz, PA brought in three bass for 10.35 pounds.  Hart Hall of Alexandria VA finished in fifth place with three bass going 10.21 pounds.

The biggest bass for the co-anglers was caught by: David W Porter II of King George, VA that weighed 4.34 pounds and pocketed $295.

Slated for June 2nd the next divisional tournament will be held on the Chesapeake Bay out of Anchor Boats Marina in North East MD. At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance the 2018 Ray Scott Championship slated for the first week of April 2019 on Lake Eufaula, AL
