2011 Video Coverage

Morris Sheehan, US Army Retired purchased Military Bass Anglers in January of 2000. Since purchasing the company he continues to focus American Bass Anglers efforts on running events for the weekend angler of which many are active or former military. American Bass Anglers since its creation has run more fishing events for the military than any other national fishing organization.

ABA has run events at locations like Ft. Hood (Fishing for Freedoms 1, 2 and 3), 2006 Ft Campbell (101 Airborne Tournament), 2007 ABA held 3 separate take a solider fishing events in the New York, Illinois, and Georgia. Over 5,000 military personnel have had the opportunity to spend the day on a lake through these ABA operated events.

In 2008 ABA will operate the 18th annual Military Team Bass Tournament. This event continues to show the commitment and tradition of American Bass Anglers to support the military bass angler.

Aul & Aul Win Military Event After Three Day Lead

Paul Aul & Jeffrey Aul

Eufaula, AL – The team of Paul Aul & Jeffrey Aul have won the 2014 ABA Military Team Bass Tournament at Lake Eufaula with a three day total of 58.83lbs. Aul & Aul stayed ahead of the other teams during the entire event by leading all three days. The Auls weighed in 20.19lbs on Day One, 20.19lbs on Day Two, and 17.39lbs on Day Three to take the win. The Auls said that they covered water from the dam to north of the Hwy 82 Causeway, burning over 25 gallons of gas per day. Paul Aul said, “The key was to cover water”. Their fish came from shallow and deep water using white spinnerbaits and black/blue 1/2oz. jigs.

Second place of the event went to the team of Russell Mott Jr. & David Vowels with a three day total of 54.49lbs. Mott & Vowels spent all three days north of the Florence area in Cliantt Branch. They caught their Day One and Day Two bags of bass by swimming black/blue jigs with a swimbait trailer through the area grass beds. The team did not have a fish until 1 p.m. on Day Three, but they scratched up a 13.80lb limit by spending their last hour of the day dragging a Carolina rigged watermelon/red 10” Berkley Power Worm on a point in Cowikee Creek.

2nd place Russell Mott Jr. & David Vowels

Clay Jens & John Adams finished in third place with a three day total of 52.29lbs. Jens & Adams fished in Pataula Creek and in the area known as “The Witch’s Ditch” all three days of the event. They caught their bass throwing Spro frogs in the grass early and dragging ledges in 6-15ft of water with a Carolina rig.

The fourth place team of Jessie Ayers & Frank Untalan used an unusual technique to catch most of the fish that they weighed in at the event. They used a white 3/8oz Chatterbait by “jigging it like a spoon” in 10-20ft of water. Ayers & Untalan spent most of their time on a deep bank south of Cheneyhatchee Creek and in the mouth of Pataula Creek. They, also, caught a few of their bass on a Texas rigged green pumpkin Senko with a 3/8oz weight.

The rest of the top 10:
5. Michael McGill & Hoyt Tidwell II 50.32lbs
6. Stanley Chandler & Kyle Brooks 49.10lbs

3rd place Clay Jens & John Adams

7. George Kunkle III & Clifton Holt 48.14lbs
8. Steve Drinnon & David Coleman 47.88lbs
9. Jim Hill & Harry Potts 47.84lbs
10. James Sheehan & Rollin Willmon 47.72lbs

Day Three Big Bass was brought in by the team of Stan Chandler & Kyle Brooks. Chandler & Brooks brought in a 6.03lb largemouth that they caught swimming a candy bug Zoom Speed Worm around grass and lily pads in two feet of water in Cowikee Creek.

The team of Timmy Ezell & Mike Dimatteo held on to Big Bass of the event with the 6.07lb largemouth that they brought in on Day Two.

This event was hosted by the Eufaula-Barbour Chamber of Commerce.

The 2015 ABA Military Team Bass Tournament will be held again at Lake Eufaula. The exact dates have not been announced, but the event will take place around the first of May as always.

24th Annual Military Team Bass Tournament
set for Lake Eufaula in 2014

ATHENS, Ala. – More than 200 angling teams will descent upon Lake Eufaula, Ala., to compete for major prizes and national bragging rights during the 2014 Military Team Bass Tournament, jointly announced American Bass Anglers and the Eufaula-Barbour Chamber of Commerce today.

The 24th annual Military Team Bass Tournament will take place at Lakepoint State Resort (334-687-8011/www.alapark.com/LakePointResort) in the town of Eufaula, Ala., on May 4-9, 2014. The resort provides excellent dining, lodging and water access facilities for the competitors, tournament officials and fans. The competitors will fish the 45,181-acre reservoir along the Chattahoochee River, which spans part of the Alabama-Georgia border.

“Eufaula is honored to host the Military Team Bass Tournament,” said Jack TIbbs, mayor of Eufaula. “It is a great way for the city of Eufaula and Barbour County to show their appreciation to the men and women of our United States Armed Forces.”

Presented by American Bass Anglers, the annual tournament pits the best bass anglers from the U.S. Armed Forces in competition for national and service bragging rights. Any active duty Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, National Guard, Reserve or Coast Guard member may fish in this event. Families of military members, honorably discharged veterans, Department of Defense civilians, contractors and retired military members may also fish this event. The event will also be held on Lake Eufaula in 2015 and 2016.

The Military Team Bass Fishing Tournament began in 1991 as a way to promote fishing and camaraderie among all branches of the military. In 1975, ABA began as the Military Bass Anglers Association, an organization dedicated to providing bass anglers in the military an opportunity to compete in tournaments with other military members. In 2000, Morris Sheehan, a life member who retired from the U.S. Army, bought MBAA, renamed it American Bass Anglers Inc., and relocated it to Athens, Ala.

Officially dubbed Walter F. George Reservoir, the lake dates to 1962. Bassmaster magazine ranked the reservoir as Number 41 on its list of the top 100 bass lakes in the United States for 2013. Over the years, Lake Eufaula produced many double-digit bass with excellent numbers of 1- to 4-pound bass and plenty 5- to 8-pounders. It still produces occasional double-digit fish including a few up to 12 pounds. Improvements to the fishery should make bass fishing even better in coming years, the mayor predicted.

The main river and numerous creek channels combine to create 640 shoreline miles. Many people fish the river ledges with a variety of baits, but abundant vegetation in the flats can also hold monster bass all year long. Anglers also fish such tributaries as Cowikee Creek near Lakepoint State Park Resort, Reeves Branch, White Oak Creek, Sandy Branch, Thomas Mill Creek, Barbour Creek, Chewalla Creek, Chenyhatchee Creek and Pataula Creek, the largest tributary on the Georgia side just north of the dam.

Since the lake straddles the Alabama-Georgia line, anglers can fish in the main waters with a license from either state. For Eufaula area information, call the Eufaula Barbour Chamber of Commerce at 800-524-7529, or see www.eufaulachamber.com.

For more information on this tournament, call ABA at 256-232-0406. On line, see www.americanbassanglers.com.

American Bass Anglers commitment is to provide low cost, close to home tournaments for the weekend angler and at the same time offer each competitor an upward path for individual angler progression.
