Susan & John Mills Master Lake Hartwell

Susan and John Mills took first place on Lake Hartwell on Saturday, April 12. Their sack of five fish weighed in at 14-pounds, 5-ounces. The Mills, from Leesville, South Carolina, were sight fishing in the clearer waters nearer the Hartwell dam. By 10:30 am, they had not caught a keeper and were concerned that their strategy was not going to produce. A recent rise in water level had taken beds deeper and made them harder to see. But, within the next four hours, they culled through 7 nice bass to come in with the winning weight.

Tami and Jimmy Raper, from Easley, South Carolina, claimed second place honors. Their sack of five bass weighed 11-pounds, 9-ounces. Their fish came mostly on a jig and a Texas rigged green pumpkin worm.

Vicie and John English, from Black Mountain, North Carolina, took third place with 10-pounds, 9-ounces. Their five fish came on Ol’ Monster worms in water as shallow as one foot.

Susan Mills took the Ladies Big Fish award with a 4-pound, 11-ounce bass. This fish was caught sight fishing with a white jig. Susan said she’d actually given up on catching this fish. But, it hit her jig as she was retrieving it, likely a reaction strike.

Jimmy Raper won Men’s Big Fish with a 4-pound, 8-ounce bass. His fish were also caught by sight fishing, over four feet deep. Jimmy’s big bass was caught with a drop-shot rig.

Four new teams joined the South Carolina Couples this month: Lynn and Steve Moeller (Greenwood, SC), Connie and Rick Freeze (Liberty, SC), Sharon Katorincek and Eddy Morgan (Denver, NC), and Ramey Bartley and her Dad, Scotty (Pendleton, SC).

It was a beautiful spring day. All of the teams caught fish. Several couples went out to dinner the night before the tournament. An early dinner after weigh-in was also enjoyed by many couples.

Special thanks to local sponsors Strickland Marine and Rod Steward. Gallons of oil from Strickland Marine were given as drawing prizes to lucky teams who did not go home with cash prizes. A handy Rod Steward rod/reel stand was another appreciated prize.

The next South Carolina Division tournament is set for Lake Keowee on May 17. The event will be out of South Cove Park near Seneca. The host hotel for this event is the Days Inn, 11015 N. Radio Station Rd, Seneca, SC 29678 864-885-0710 (mention “Bass Tournament” or “Martha Goodfellow” for the “couples” discount rate.)
