Victoria and Dale Goff Win on Lake Russell

Victoria and Dale Goff, from Lugoff, South Carolina, took top honors on Lake Russell Saturday, March 22. Their 9½ pound 5-fish sack was culled from 15 to 20 keepers caught during the day. While starting shallower in the morning, by 11:00 am they had shifted to fish in 15 to 20 feet depths.   Their deeper fish were caught on Zoom Brush Hogs with half-ounce tungsten sinkers. Lake Russell’s plentiful trees were part of the Goff’s winning formula.

Tammy and Rick Jones of Taylorsville, North Carolina, claimed second place with an 8½ pound 5-fish sack. Creek points with trees were an important part of the Jones’ successful strategy. They caught more than 30 fish during the day with shakey-heads, jigs, and swim baits.

Ladies’ Big Fish honors went to Tammy Jones with a bass weighing 1-pound 13-ounces. Dale Goff’s 2-pound 9-ouncer was the Men’s Big Fish.

Brooke Haynie and her grandfather, Wendell Ashley, took 3rd place with 8-pounds 1-ounce. They reported that they had only one fish at 3:00 pm. But, by the 3:30 weigh-in they had filled in their 5-fish limit. This is a great example of “never give up!”

Three new teams joined the South Carolina Couples this month: Beverly and Gary Heinly of Chapin, SC, Tami and Jimmy Raper of Easley, SC, and Samantha Madison and Jacob Griffith of Sandy Springs, GA.

We recognized Samantha’s and Jacob’s recent engagement. And we also recognized Janette and Charles Rodgers, Cayce, SC, having 10 great-grandchildren, the oldest being about the same age as Samantha and Jacob. This seemed clear evidence of the appeal of bass fishing to all ages.

It was a beautiful spring day on Lake Russell with morning temperatures over 40 degrees and the afternoon over 70 degrees. All of the 13 teams caught fish. Special thanks to Strickland Marine for providing hats for all of the anglers, and several gallons of Mercury oil that were used as drawing prizes. Thanks also to Rod Steward, another local sponsor, for providing rod/reel “caddies” for drawing prizes.

Join us for our next tournament on April 12, Lake Hartwell, Broyles Landing.  Our South Carolina Couples Division focus is, “FUN ~ FAMILY ~ FRIENDS
