South Carolina Couples to open on Lake Keowee

ATHENS, Ala. – The South Carolina Division 11 of the American Bass Anglers American Couples Series kicks off its 2012 season Feb. 18 on Keowee Lake near Six Mile, S.C. The tournament launches out of Mile Creek Landing at safe light.

From the Cherokee word meaning, “place of mulberries,” Keowee Lake stretches about 26 miles and measures about three miles wide. In all, the reservoir covers about 18,500 acres with about 300 shoreline miles. It averages about 54 feet deep. The Keowee and Little rivers run into it. The Seneca River, a tributary of the Savannah River, flows out of it.

“Lake Keowee is a deep, clear lake that’s mostly known for its spotted bass, but it does have some largemouth,” said Martha Goodfellow of Greenville, S.C., the division tournament co-director with her husband Don. “It also has some smallmouth bass. If someone could get a limit of spotted bass with a good largemouth kicker fish, they might win. Winning weights are usually about 12 to 18 pounds.”
