Schmitt opens Maryland season with river win

ATHENS, Ala. – Bryan Schmitt started the season with a win during the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, Maryland Division 21 season opener, held March 23, 2013, on the Potomac River.

Running out of Smallwood State Park in Marbury, Md., on a frosty morning, the Chesapeake Bay charter captain from Deale, Md., caught five bass weighing 19.35 pounds. He fished deep water near a small rock pile just off the main river channel to catch a total of eight keepers. For the Boater Division victory, Schmitt took home a check for $3,022.

“I’ve been fishing the Potomac River for about 12 years,” Schmitt revealed. “March is usually my favorite time to fish the river because usually the bigger bass are up shallow feeding and getting ready to spawn. At this time of year, I usually fish the grass flats, but with the temperature at 27 degrees, I went deeper. I found a deep hole and sat on it all day. I immediately caught two quality fish on a 1/2-ounce jig. I had a limit by 10 a.m. and culled twice during the day. I missed two good fish.”

In second for the boaters, James M. Tyson of Middletown, Pa., brought in a five-bass tournament limit for 15.43 pounds. He anchored his bag with a 5.13-pounder.

Adam Janerella of Jersey Shore, Pa., finished in third place among the boaters with five bass and 15.38 pounds. Michael A Phillips of Clayton, Del., placed fourth with three bass going 12.01 pounds, followed by Otis Darnell of Linden, Va., with four bass for 11.11 pounds. Christiana D. Bradley of Bealeton, Va., only landed one bass, but her 5.38-pounder set the tournament lunker standard.
In the Co-Angler Division, Anthony Lohr of Hamstead, Md., won with three bass weighing 7.83 pounds. He capped his catch with a 3.39-pounder to pocket $1,511.

“I fish the Potomac River as often as I can,” Lohr said. “We fished fairly shallow around main and secondary points. I only had three bites on rattle baits and chattering baits.”
Tom L. Carpenter of Alexandria, Va., placed second among the co-anglers. He landed a three-bass division limit weighing 7.27 pounds.

Michael Leone of Glennburney, Md., placed third among the co-anglers with a three-bass limit for 7.18 pounds, followed by Eric Madden of Lumberton, N.J., with two bass and 6.89 pounds. Cherif A. Zaher of Orangeville, Pa., rounded out the top five co-anglers with two bass for 5.92 pounds including a 4.04-pound kicker. David A. Zimmerman of Bristol, Pa., caught one bass weighing 4.41 pounds to win the division big bass title.
