Boss wins big on Kentucky Lake

ATHENS, Ala. – Sam E. Boss won more than $4,300 during the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, Kentucky Division 15 tournament, held June 30, 2012, on Kentucky Lake.

Running out of Paris Landing near Buchanan, the Paducah, Ky., angler caught five bass weighing 23 pounds for a 4.6-pound average. He anchored his bag with a 6.13-pound kicker that earned the Boater Division big bass title. For the victory, Boss pocketed $2,968. He collected another $368 for the big bass and an extra $1,000 from Mercury Outboards.

“About 90 percent of my fish came on a 3/4-ounce white spinnerbait, but the biggest bass hit a spoon,” Boss explained. “I also caught some on a jig and some on a crankbait. I fished a point on the main river ledge with a little ditch running behind it. The ditch was in about 15 feet of water with a shell bed in the bottom of it. We’d get a big bite about every hour.”

In second for the 75 boaters, Houston R. Smith of Clarksville, Tenn., brought in a five-bass tournament limit going 18.17 pounds. He earned $1,484.

“We stayed on the main lake and threw 3/4-ounce football jigs with green pumpkin trailers at shell beds,” Smith said. “I had two spots that we fished. I caught everything that bit.”
Eric Foister of Clarksville, Tenn., landed in third place among the boaters. He caught five keepers for a 17.72-pound tally to take home a check for $989.

“We fished the grass,” Foister revealed. “We fished a little ditch running through the grass in about four to seven feet of water. We had a good topwater bite for about 30 minutes and got a limit. After the sun got up, we pulled them out of the grass with a plum 10-inch worm.”

James “Lance” L. Freeman of Eddyville, Ky., placed fourth with a five-bass limit going 16.66 pounds. Rounding out the top five boaters, Gary Singleton brought in five bass for 15.87 pounds.

In the Co-Angler Division, Mike Blumer of Louisville, Ky., led the pack from the back with three bass and 16.39 pounds for a 5.46-pound average. He anchored his bag with a 5.56-pound kicker. For his first BWS win, Blumer pocketed $1,437.

“We dragged a jig to catch our fish,” Blumer said. “We fished three spots up north and some down south. I had a limit by 7:30 a.m.”

In second, Jody D. Girten of Morganfield, Ky., landed a three-bass division limit for 11.39 pounds. His biggest bass weighed 4.43 pounds, netting Girten a check for $719.

“We caught our fish on a big worm, a big jig and a swimbait,” Girten recalled. “We caught our fish early and had a limit by 9:30 a.m. I pulled in a good fish about every hour.”

Arby M. Tevault of Elberfield, Ind., placed third among the co-anglers with three bass going 11.12 pounds. He anchored his catch with a 6.47-pounder that took the tournament lunker title. Tevault won $479 for third place and an extra $174 for the bucketmouth.

“I caught seven keepers and the big fish was my fourth fish,” Tevault said. “I caught the big fish on a shaky head at about 9 a.m. Later in the day, I broke a big one off on a spinnerbait and another on a shaky head.”

Rob Jones of Woodlawn, Tenn., found three keepers weighing 11.11 pounds for fourth place .Victor Nicholson of Clarksville, Tenn., rounded out the top five co-anglers with three bass for 10.54 pounds including a 5.52-pound kicker.
