Crowder takes lead on the James River

ATHENS, Ala. – Kermit C. Crowder took the lead on the first day of the two-day 2013 Toyota Bassmaster Weekend Series Northeast Regional Championship, held Oct. 11 on the James River.

Running out of Chickahominy Riverfront Park in Williamsburg, Va., the Petersburg, Va., angler leads on the first day of the last ABA qualifying event of the season with three bass weighing 13.99 pounds. He anchored his bag with a 6.47-pound kicker.

In second for the boaters, Wesley Harris of Rustburg, Va., landed a five-bass daily tournament limit going 13.76 pounds. Jason S. Law of Egg Harbor City, N.J., holds third with five bass going 13.04 pounds including a 3.04-pound kicker. Dave M. Davenport of Milford, Ohio, occupies the fourth place position among the boaters with a five-bass limit for 12.87 pounds. Tim D. Grein of Winston Salem, N.C., rounds out the top five boaters with five bass at 11.89 pounds.

Dennis McNeal of Stafford, Va., holds 12th place with two bass going 10.45 pounds. He set the Boater Division lunker standard on the first day with an 8.35-pounder.

In the Co-Angler Division, Steven Garrett of Charlottesville, Va., leads after one day of action with three bass going 13.83 pounds. He capped his catch on Day 1 with an 8.37-pound kicker, the largest bass caught by any competitor on the first day of competition.

Holding second for the co-anglers, Michael Nelms of Fredericksburg, Va., brought in a three-bass daily division limit for 13.24 pounds. Danny “D.J.” J. Ryan of Cleves, Ohio, holds third on Day 1 with three bass going 11.65 pounds. He anchored his catch with a 7.10-pound kicker. Danny R. Towe of Salem, Va., sits in fourth place with three bass at 7.62 pounds. George V. Baucom of Charlotte, N.C., follows with two bass at 6.89 pounds.

The action continues through Oct. 12. This event features a 200-boat field including the top 40 boaters and co-anglers representing the Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia divisions. The free public weigh-in takes place at 3 p.m.

After this regional event, the best anglers from this tournament will compete against the top anglers from three other regional events during the BWS National Championship tournament, set for Nov. 6-9, 2013, on Old Hickory Lake near Hendersonville, Tenn. The Boater Division champion will compete in the 2014 Bassmaster Classic, slated for Feb. 21-23 on Lake Guntersville, Ala.
