Scott Peterson Wins on N-S Center
Athens, Al - Scott Peterson won the American Fishing Tour Minnesota division 44 tournament with five fish weighing 15.85 pounds held on N & S Center on 07/20/2014.
Preparation. Focus. More often than not those two strategies win the day on the ABA/AFT circuit, and the July 20 event on North and South Center Lakes was no exception. Dire reports from prefishing outings leading up to the Minnesota District 44 tournament left most anglers expecting a meager day on the water, and a sultry weather forecast calling for 90 humid degrees didn't make the prospect much more appealing. Nevertheless, a good roster of bass chasers showed up for the tournament morning brief and attacked the lake with gusto. The top three bags all belonged to competitors who spent plenty of time of the water preparing and stayed true to their game plans through thick and thin. Event winner Scott Peterson brought in an impressive sack of 15.85 pounds. He later told onlookers, "Based on what I've seen out here recently, I decided early on that I was going to live or die on those rockpiles today. As it turned out, it was the way to go, and I'm glad I did."
Peterson spent a good part of the day in the 16-18 foot range portion of a long submerged point, and the strategy paid off nicely for him. John Stevenson initially tried a similar deepwater approach, but didn't fare as well and instead decided to head for his favorite environment of lilly pads and bulrushes. Slipping a frog through the slop was the key as John conjured up a nice limit of 15.17 pounds of swamp largemouth for the scales.
Jim Hardies spent many hours trying to find the answer prefishing with no clear pattern emerging. He decided to stick to his tried and true method of working the established weedlines with a jig and trailer, and once again it put him in the money with a 12.63 pound bag that well exceeded his prior practice results.
As the day ended, anglers were glad to have been mercifully spared from blazing heat by a steady cooling wind, and overall the field enjoyed a respectable day, with about 90% reporting a full bag limit at check in time.
Our next tournament will take place on August 10, 2014 at Lake Waconia.
